Natural Baller: What is it & how is it changing the way women view skincare?

Hello, Ballers! My name is Julia, and I am the face behind Natural Baller! I am sure you all have a lot of questions…Who is this girl? What’s Natural Baller? Is this just one more overpriced skincare brand run by another aspiring influencer? I hope to use this blog to answer your questions and to bring some realness back into today’s social media dominated world.

So, let’s take it from the top! I am a 21-year-old recent college graduate from Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana. I majored in Business Administration with double concentrations in Marketing and Management and a minor in Public Relations and Advertising (a mouthful, I know). I am the oldest of 4 kids, I am a huge homebody, I love working out, I could eat ice cream 3 times a day if my metabolism allowed it, I love sports, I am passionate about skincare, I do not wear much makeup, and I am a quality time kind of girl!

One could imagine how a 21-year-old girl, with a very natural look, who truly values quality time, might struggle with all of this “social media” stuff. Between Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, there are so many platforms to keep up with. Am I supposed to learn to contour my face with makeup or use an editing app for my photos in order to get more likes? Can I ever hang out with my friends or younger siblings without someone scrolling through their phones? Why are people so critical of one another online? How does everyone on my Instagram feed find the time or money to travel so much? These questions became a focal point for a lot of my thoughts as I lie in bed at night.

When I finally took a social media class in college, I became painfully aware of the very planned out and posed nature Instagram was beginning to take on. Not only is Instagram now a highlight reel of people’s lives, but it has become a competition to see who can create the best content and have the most followers. Additionally, I learned how devastating this can be to young females’ self-esteems. One article I read for class stated,

“70% of women say social media affects their body image.”

Other than that being a huge number, I am not exactly sure why this bothered me so much. As someone who didn’t have a problem deleting Snapchat or staying off of Twitter, I honestly don’t know why I could not just ignore the parts of social media I didn’t like. I guess I felt like I could never truly get away from it. Anyway, I decided (either bravely or naively, you be the judge) I was going to do my part to try and change the way we use social media.

Social media has become like a massive reality T.V. show where everybody has the opportunity to tell their stories and share their lives. Instead of using it to build our own personal brands and share our identities, we do completely unnatural things “for the gram” or we filter our photos until they are nearly unrecognizable! Now, I do not expect I am saying anything all of you reading this do not already know. But if this is the case, then WHY do we still allow ourselves to compare our lives to what we see on social media? It doesn’t make sense, yet at times we all allow what we see on social media to leave us feeling inadequate or insecure.

The reality is that social media isn’t going anywhere, and it’s not all bad! Social media can be a great resource and a platform for self-expression. My goal is to help make genuine beauty the new norm on social media. I want to motivate others to live life with no filter! And I intend to lead by example on this one. Natural Baller is a completely filter and edit free brand! To take it one step further, I no longer filter the photos on my personal account either.

So, to answer the question “is this one more overpriced skincare brand run by another aspiring influencer?” The answer is no. Natural Baller is a natural and organic skincare line. The products are moderately priced and they are: cruelty free, SLS free, phthalate free, dye free, paraben free, gluten free, and free of synthetic fragrances (most of the products are vegan as well). What makes Natural Baller different? Well, for starters-- me! I have no desire to become social media famous or take on the influencer lifestyle. Now, before people freak out and say I am hating on influencers, that is absolutely not the case! I follow my fair share of fashion, skincare, and food influencers just like everyone else. I may even rely on them a little too much as I am constantly filling online shopping carts with items my favorite bloggers tell me are “a MUST-HAVE this season!” I think influencers are a huge resource. That being said, I also think we need some balance. We could all use a little less staged, filtered, and posed photos in our feeds. We could all benefit from following more accounts that make us feel good in our natural skin!

I started Natural Baller because I realized that one of the main reasons I have always felt so confident showing up to a party or social event bare-faced and with towel-dried hair is because, for the most part, I have always had clear skin. I have always used a skincare routine to keep my skin bright and glowy and having clear skin is a HUGE confidence booster! The other reason I have felt confident in my natural self is my support system. I have been fortunate to have the most incredible family who has always made me feel like I am at my best self BEFORE I put on any makeup or add any filters to my photos.

Honestly, I am a normal 21-year-old girl with all of the same insecurities and stresses as all of you reading this. I created Natural Baller to provide you with a clean skincare routine that will make you feel confident in your natural skin, as well as to provide you with a support system that will make you feel confident in the REAL YOU! I hope to use this blog to create a community of BALLERS who are encouraging of one another, and who are ready to share some fresh and real social media content that others can relate to. I am so excited to begin this new journey with all of you. The best is yet to come!

Xoxo,
Julia

If you took the time to read this rather lengthy blog post (I will shorten them up in the future, I promise), I would first like to say THANK YOU!  And second, I ask you to share this with anyone you think might enjoy it or who could benefit from a less-filtered lifestyle! Lastly, I would like to welcome you all to the Natural Baller family. Get ready to #LIVELIFEWITHNOFILTER !!!
